N-P-K, Micronutrients and
Hydroponics Food Formula explained
Plant foods have 3 main ingredients, Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). These 3 ingredients are usually listed on the front label of the plant food in the order of N-P-K. A 20-20-20 plant food has Nitrogen level of 20% Phosphorus level of 20% Potassium level of 20%.
nutrients fall into 2 categories: macronutrients and micronutrients. Macro-nutrients are the elements that plants need in large amounts. They are: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulfur. Micronutrients are the elements that plants need in small amounts (sometimes called trace elements). They are iron, manganese, copper, zinc, molybdenum, cobalt, boron and chlorine.
A standard hydroponics formula (like our Super A and B formula or DNF brand or Bigfoot) is most often used by growers using ebb&flow, flood, drip or aeroponics systems but it has also proven to be compatible with soil-less mixes (like our Pro-mix or Sunshine Brand).
This hydroponics plant food formula usually comes in 2 separate bottles. In most cases one bottle is called A and the other B. In order to use this formula correctly you have to mix 5 ml./L. of Super Veg. A (read the label on your brand of food to determine your correct dosage) in to your water container and then add 5 ml./L. of Super Veg. B into the same water container. NEVER mix A and B together before pouring into the water container as that will nullify the effect of this formula.
Soil-less mix (Brand Name Promix BX, or Promix HP, or Sun Shine Mix No.4 only)
Soil-less mix (in our case Pro-mix brand) is a "General Purpose" peat-based growing medium used for the cultivation of a wide variety of plant species. This mix is lightweight, uniform and blended to the highest degree of consistency to ensure maximum plant performance. In case of cannabis the advantage is that the PH testing of water is no longer necessary as Pro-mix brings down PH levels of water to between 5 and 6 which is just right.
